Presentation Ideas

Post your ideas for presentation you would like to give or see.

Would like to give

  • Rebekah Rice might coordinate a session on creating a "Conversations in Education" Reader based loosely on the structure of Northwest Earth Institute study groups: bring a favorite article or chapter or quote with you if you might attend this.
  • Paul Zachos would like to make a presentation on 'The Logical-Mathematical Foundations of Concept Learning' (using as an example the concepts underlying the Cubes and Liquids assessment activities).
  • Wil Doane: Wikis -- what they are and how to use them for community building and education
  • Christian Sweningsen will offer to share reflections on a science of experience, and how the NewScience Initiative supports an active-networking resource community for educators.
  • Bob DeSieno is considering a presentation on issues-oriented education for senior citizens that encourages participation in grass-roots democracy.
  • Henrike Holdrege would like to offer a presentation related to the questions: "What is accomplished for the student through experience-based and place-based education? Why is it so crucial at the present time?"
  • Greg Hampson would like to give a presentation on "Hands-On Learning - a Bridge to Generalization and Concept Development"
  • Dan Farley might facilitate a conversation about issues raised in Thomas Friedman's book __The World is Flat__.
  • Michael Rice would like to show the 59 minute DVD "Signs Out of Time: the story of archeologist Marija Gimbutas" (by Starhawk and Donna Read) AND hold a discussion with special focus on scientism (or the limits of the scientific paradigm of reductionism).
  • Paul Zachos would present: A new path to educational change...from the ground up!
  • Jennifer Burgin might share details from the Earth, Moon, Sun and Shadows unit for middle-school students (developed in conjunction with ACASE).
  • Andy Fyfe intends to lead a discussion conerning nature education and the flow learning cycle
  • Flannery Denny would like to start a discussion on how to infuse the knowledge and talents of the greater community into the classroom.
  • Dave Roberts would like to present an overview of the radical recomendations of the Commission on Education and the Economy released earlier this year
  • Kenneth Grau: Biological Foundations of Education
  • Zahid Ayar: faster learning of knowledge with the language of thought - Nelements
  • "An Inconvenient Truth": The NSTA turned down free copies for every science teacher in the US. Let's watch it!
  • John-Michael Caldaro would like to have a discussion about what the goals of science education are. What exactly is determined about the world through scientific experimentation? How do we as educators bring our students to an understanding of what science can, and has, told us about the world we live in?
  • Kathy Ceceri is thinking of hosting a Q&A on homeschooling.
  • Bob Pruzek aims to discuss ways to compare groups fairly (without bias, if possible). See the Charter School document at ACASE to see what this is about (there in the context of studying Charter School student outcomes in relation to those of public school students).
  • A Textbook of Tools - Terri Stripling would like to wing a discussion on the methods that she and her partners are actively using to bring inquiry learning and conceptually-grounded teaching to public schools.

Would like to see

  • How about Sun & Shadows? I want to see those materials in real life!
  • Home schooling and meeting standards (Question: Are these two separate topics?)
